Your thoughts race faster than your focus can keep up. Ideas, plans, & distractions collide.
Your intentions are hijacked by fear & what-ifs.
You're exhausted & small tasks feel impossible.
You've tried everything — meds, diets, acupuncture, meditation, therapy — but nothing seems to work.

Meet Christine Boudreau
Licensed Therapist and Functional Medicine Practitioner
Hi! I'm Christine Boudreau, functional medicine practitioner and licensed professional counselor (TX LPC # 91224).
I suffered with chronic mental health issues, like anxiety, OCD, and depression, for many years. I saw several therapists and doctors, but traditional treatment didn't work for me. It was only after I learned how to treat the root causes of my mental health issues that my symptoms improved. Learn more about me and my health journey.
Functional medicine for mental health explores how gut health, nutrition, hormones, sleep, metabolic imbalances, inflammation, and nervous system function may influence emotional and psychological well-being. You might have heard this called functional psychiatry when a psychiatrist provides this type of treatment.
At DOTS Wellness, I integrate science-backed functional medicine with psychotherapy using the DOTS Method™ to help clients better understand the biological, psychological, and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to their symptoms. It's intentionally designed to work alongside your current care, including any medication your prescriber has recommended.

What Are Common Root Causes of Mental Health Conditions?
Mental health conditions are complex and rarely have a single cause. Genetics, life experiences, psychological stress, and physical health can all influence how we think, feel, and function. While conventional mental health treatment often focuses on managing symptoms through psychotherapy and medication, functional medicine adds another layer by investigating biological and lifestyle factors that may contribute to those symptoms.
The goal of root-cause functional medicine is to understand why symptoms may be occurring, versus simply identifying what symptoms are present. For example, thyroid dysfunction can sometimes produce symptoms resembling anxiety or depression, while nutrient deficiencies, poor sleep, and blood sugar fluctuations may contribute to fatigue, irritability, or difficulty concentrating.
The DOTS Method™ explores potential contributing factors, including:
-
Gut health: Digestive dysfunction, nutrient absorption issues, and the emerging relationship between the gut microbiome and brain health
-
Metabolic imbalances: Glucose fluctuations that may affect energy, mood, and concentration
-
Hormonal and thyroid health: Imbalances that can contribute to mood changes, anxiety-like symptoms, or fatigue
-
Environmental exposures: Certain toxins or exposures that may affect neurological health, when supported by a relevant exposure history
-
Nutritional deficiencies: Inadequate levels of nutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, or iron that support neurological function
-
Chronic stress and trauma: Prolonged stress responses that can influence emotional regulation, sleep, and nervous system functioning
How Does Functional Medicine Identify Root Causes?
Functional medicine uses a comprehensive assessment including medical history, family history, symptoms, nutrition, sleep, stress, diet, lifestyle, and relevant laboratory findings to identify factors that may be contributing to mental health challenges.
Not every client needs extensive testing, and not every biological imbalance is the cause of a mental health condition. The goal is to connect the DOTS between physical and psychological health, identify actionable factors, and develop an individualized plan that complements appropriate mental healthcare.

Uncover Root Cause of Mental Health Symptoms with the DOTS Method™
Depression, ADHD, OCD, & anxiety aren't "all in your head." They're in your gut, nervous system, biochemistry, microbiome, and more because physical health factors can contribute to mental health symptoms.
Mental health symptoms are red flags from other systems in your body that are dysregulated. The body is a set of interconnected systems.
I specialize in connecting the DOTS between your symptoms and root cause.
When you uncover & treat the root causes beneath your mental health conditions, then focus, calm, & peace become achievable.

Chronic anxiety, racing thoughts

What Are the Benefits of Functional Medicine for Mental Health?
Functional medicine offers a whole-person approach to mental health by exploring how physical health, lifestyle, and emotional well-being interact. Rather than looking only at symptoms, it asks whether factors such as nutrition, sleep, blood sugar, hormones, gut health, inflammation, or chronic stress may be influencing how you feel.
For some individuals, this approach can provide a clearer understanding of why symptoms may be persisting and what supportive steps may help. Functional medicine is not a replacement for appropriate mental health care. Instead, it can complement psychotherapy, medication management, and medical care by identifying modifiable factors that may be affecting mood, focus, energy, and resilience.
Potential benefits of a functional medicine approach to mental health may include:
-
Better understanding of possible contributors to symptoms
-
More personalized nutrition and lifestyle strategies
-
Improved awareness of how sleep, stress, and physical health affect mental well-being
-
Support for stable energy, focus, and emotional regulation
-
A more integrated plan that addresses both mind and body
Clients may also report benefits such as:
-
Calmer mood and improved focus
-
Fewer intrusive thoughts
-
More stable energy and motivation
-
Better sleep and emotional resilience
-
A renewed sense of self-trust and hope
Important note: Results vary from person to person. Functional medicine does not diagnose or cure every mental health condition, but it can help uncover contributing factors and support a more individualized care plan.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the DOTS Method™ Integrative Functional Medicine for Mental Health in Frisco, Texas
1. Can functional medicine really help with anxiety, OCD, or ADHD?
Yes. Evidence-based functional medicine analyzes why symptoms exist by exploring root causes like gut health, nutrient balance, hormones, and inflammation. When your body is more in balance, your brain chemistry has a better chance to stabilize. When we treat root causes, many of our clients find that their anxiety reduces, intrusive thoughts fade, and focus increases.
2. What makes the DOTS Method™ different from traditional therapy?
The DOTS Method™ combines psychotherapy with functional medicine to explore both psychological and physical factors that may contribute to mental health challenges. Beyond discussing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we look at nutrition, gut health, nervous system regulation, and lifestyle patterns to better understand your health and develop a personalized plan for improvement.
3. Do I have to stop my medication to follow functional medicine protocols?
No. You can continue taking your prescribed medications while incorporating functional medicine strategies. The goal is to support your mental and physical health, not automatically eliminate medications. If changes to your prescriptions become appropriate, those decisions should be made collaboratively with your prescribing healthcare provider.
4. How does gut health affect mental health?
Your gut and brain communicate through a complex network known as the gut-brain axis. Research suggests that the gut microbiome, immune system, and digestive health may influence mood, stress responses, and overall well-being. Although scientists are still studying these connections, supporting digestive health through nutrition and lifestyle changes may be one helpful part of a comprehensive mental health plan.
5. How long does it take to feel better?
Every person's health journey is different, and your timeline depends on your unique case. Some clients notice improvements in mood, focus, and energy within several weeks. For other clients, it might take several months or even a year to see improvements. Progress depends on many factors, like the complexity of your case, consistency with your treatment plan, number and severity of root causes. For example, a client with mycotoxins and Lyme disease might require considerable more time to improve compared to a client with an imbalanced microbiome, intestinal permeability, and nutritional deficiencies.
6. Do you offer in-person & virtual visits for mental health and functional medicine?
Yes, I offer in-person functional medicine and therapy sessions at my Frisco clinic at Hall Park in Frisco, Texas. As a licensed professional counselor in Texas (TX LPC # 91224), I'm licensed to provide therapy via virtual telehealth across Texas. As a functional medicine practitioner, I can provide functional medicine to patients via telehealth across the U.S.
7. Is this functional medicine approach right for me if I’ve already tried therapy and medication?
Yes, if you’ve tried therapy and medication but still struggle with symptoms, it’s a possibility that the root cause hasn’t been addressed or treated and a more integrative approach may offer additional insight. Traditional mental health treatments can be effective, but physical health and lifestyle factors may also deserve attention. The DOTS Method™ explores those connections to identify opportunities for personalized support while building on the care you've already received.
