Common Questions about Functional Medicine,
Counseling, & Gut Health
-
What can I expect in a session with you?First and foremost, you can expect compassion, empathy, warmth, and authenticity from me as I work hard to establish trust with you so that we can have open, honest conversations. You can expect me to listen intently, not only to the words you speak, but also for the subtle meanings beneath the words in order to unearth unspoken and undiscovered truths. You can expect me to gently challenge you when I suspect there is avoidance, denial, or thoughts and behaviors that might be impeding your progress. You can expect me to partner with you to search for the root cause by diligently probing the issue until we hit on something -- causing that profound a-ha moment -- where we know we stumbled upon the deepest meaning and truth. You can expect me to safely guide you on your journey with unconditional support and encouragement.

Do you meet with clients in-person, virtually, or both?I exclusively offer virtual sessions because I find that many people are unable to easily and consistently attend therapy in a physical location due to geographical or time constraints. It is important to me that everyone has access to quality mental healthcare. Managing a virtual practice allows me to reach rural areas that are often underserved. I'm licensed by the state of Texas, which allows me to provide psychotherapy services across our great state.

Do you accept insurance?I do not accept insurance, but I'm happy to provide you with a superbill to submit to insurance, if you wish. The primary reason I do not accept insurance is because insurance providers require a diagnosis of the client by the practitioner. I strongly disagree, on moral and ethical principles, with diagnosis as a means for treatment. My issue with diagnosis is based on: (1) diagnosis can lead to stress for the client as the diagnosis itself can be traumatizing as it merely serves to label the symptoms, (2) it is easy for a practitioner to misdiagnose symptoms, thus potentially causing harm to the client, (3) diagnosis is based upon the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), which has stirred some controversy for its errors and omissions, and (4) I believe privacy is of the utmost importance in mental healthcare, and sharing diagnosis with a third-party payer is a breach of privacy, in my opinion. The second reason is because, unfortunately, insurance does not cover functional medicine, even though functional medicine is evidenced-based and scientifically proven through the rigorous gold-standard of testing: peer-reviewed, double-blind, randomized, and controlled clinical trials.
-
How soon will I see results?Your results depend on you. Results themselves are up to interpretation. Timing is based on a plethora of influencing factors. Only you can decide if you feel improvements or positive changes because you are the only expert on you. I sincerely hope that our work together provides you with growth and transformation, but I cannot guarantee or expect that to be the case. Having said that, I have confidence in my approach, training, and skillset. I'm confident that our work together will be rewarding, but I cannot guarantee results.
-
Why do you integrate functional medicine and talk therapy?Because mind and body are integrated. There is a vast communication network between mind and body. For example, science has proven there exists a gut-brain axis that allows communication to flow freely. Mind and body work in concert. To truly heal, we must not ignore this sacred integration.
-
Can I see you for psychotherapy and not functional medicine?Yes, of course. Please know that even if you define our time together as purely a psychotherapy session, I bring all of my skills and knowledge to each session. Therefore, I might offer suggestions or insights regarding the non-psychological causes. I might suggest we discuss those components during a future session.
-
Can I see you for functional medicine and not psychotherapy?Yes, of course. Please keep in mind that while you might define our session as a functional medicine consultation, I come to the session with all of my skills and knowledge. Therefore, I might suggest psychotherapeutic interventions. I might suggest we explore those interventions during a future session.
